2024 was a pivotal year. A Bond program was approved, making funds available for much-needed improvements; the Bachman Greenbelt and its ambitious restoration came into focus; and reporters and bloggers alike helped tell the story of the challenges and triumphs of all those advocating for a Better Bachman Lake Park and the surrounding communities.
It's sometimes perceived that seeking attention in the news is criticized as a self-serving endeavor but recent articles, blog posts and videos we're sharing here prove something deeper. It's showing that the community's voices are indeed being heard. As Friends of Bachman Lake, we aim to give our community a louder voice to make our quality of life better – and greener. Northwest Dallas has long been passed over, left behind and largely ignored when it comes to making improvements to parks, trails, roads and crossings. Well, guess what? Thanks to your support, things are finally happening.
While progress might sometimes seem slow, take a look at what people were writing about last year and realize how far things have come. We put ourselves back on the map because your voices mattered. And they still do.
Here's a primer:
We have drawn attention to the Bachman Lake Greenbelt, a 40-acre site east of the lake overgrown by privet and non-native plants and dotted with trash for so long. Have you seen it lately? It's becoming a go-to area for nature walks and biking and things are just getting started. Here's a take from the Dallas Morning News (alternative link here). And from Candy's Dirt, a realty-focused blog that also reports on neighborhood goings on.
Outdoor aficionado and trail blogger Jeff Brown contributed his write-up on the Greenbelt Trail and his interest and commitment to our cause led right to his becoming one of our newest board members!
Part of the improvements at Bachman Lake Park itself will be very visible soon with the opening of the Skate Park. There was a ground breaking ceremony in March of 2024 and here we are a year later, just about ready to welcome the skating enthusiasts!
The larger trail network is a huge opportunity for Dallas to bring communities together and Friends of Bachman Lake are among the groups strongly advocating for better connectivity. Here's another Dallas Morning News take on these efforts in and around our area.
Rowing for underrepresented youth also came into focus thanks to efforts by Pat Hamner and his passion for creating BachmanROC Rowing Club, a project that leverages the existing rowing facilities at Bachman Lake to provide additional equipment and learning opportunities for young rowers.
Much of our efforts would not come to fruition without the guidance and support from Dallas Park and Recreation. Their video team also met with our group late last year to produce this three-minute segment on the importance of our collective work, which of course could not happen without you. We are grateful.
