Friends of Bachman Lake Newsletter - March 2022

No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn” — H. Borland

Next stop for the Bachman Area Study: City Council

We were wondering what was going on about the NCTCOG Bachman Area study, so we sent an email. It sounds like they are putting together an Executive summary to send to the city. We also found out that they have summarized all the findings and public feedback in a series of memos. You can find these on their website. It was heartening to read the messages of support and care for Bachman Lake Park and the clear desire from all surrounding neighborhoods to avoid a north entrance to the airport in order to protect the green spaces.

Lights Out, Texas!

Whether you are a business or homeowner, protect migrating birds passing through Texas by turning off all non-essential lighting on buildings from 11 pm to 6 am every night from March 1 – June 15 . Where conflicts apply, prioritize lights out during the Peak Migration period (April 22 – May 12) when migratory bird traffic through Texas is at its highest.

Lake dredging begins, forcing closure of Dallas Rowing Club parking lot

The Bachman Lake dredging project is starting and the first step was the closure of the parking lot next to the Rowing Club. Folks are allowed to park on the street, however please be careful as cars are flying down Shorecrest (per usual). We have escalated our concerns to Councilman Narvaez and Councilman Moreno and have also submitted 311 requests. Our ask is to get the police department out there issuing citations for speeding and to get the transportation department to install a speed alert device or maybe even a temporary cross-walk. If you too have concerns, please submit a 311 request! Simply call 3-1-1 when inside Dallas' city limits or visit - https://dallascrm.force.com/public/servicetypes.

Dallas Love Field runway project taking longer than expected

Love Field reports that the runway reconstruction project for 13R-31L (Denton Avenue runway) has hit snags due to COVID, supply chains and weather. The target for reopening the runway and easing the traffic on the Lemmon Avenue runway could now be as late as the middle to end of June. Originally reported by the Dallas Morning News, here is a non-paywalled link to the story: https://bit.ly/3IQsGpC

Urban planning map lets you plot the areas you would like to see improved

Every 20 years or so, Dallas takes a look at urban planning and seeks community input for major development, rezoning, and even trail connections. Public safety and local eye-sores are also being identified so they can be addressed. We would like to see the sanitation department's NW Transfer Station moved from the west side of the park and maybe even the DART garage moved as well. In any event, the city would like your feedback on land use in Dallas. Check out the interactive map and give them your input!

EVENTS

Our monthly plogging event is every 2nd Saturday of the month! Picking up litter while jogging (or walking or cycling) is an easy way to stay healthy and keep the park looking great! Grab a bag, a friend and help make our recreational jewel shine! Check our events list for any changes.

The community has spoken and asked for the Meet and Greet be moved to 5PM. Hey, we're not ones to get in the way of a cold beer! See you for our ‘meeting of the minds’ at Bluffview Growler on the 4th  Wednesday of the month. No RSVP needed.
