Our Trail Vision Can be Even Bolder

Dallas is making an important investment in the future of the Harry Hines corridor. Plans to transform the roadway with green trails, a new park, and safer pedestrian and bike infrastructure will help reshape an area long dominated by traffic into one that prioritizes people. The project promises cooler streets, better mobility, and healthier connections within the medical district. But Dallas has an opportunity to make this investment even more meaningful: connect it to Bachman Lake Park.
Located just a short distance away, Bachman Lake Park already offers one of Northwest Dallas’ most accessible outdoor spaces, including a 3-mile loop trail that serves walkers, runners, and cyclists every day. Yet for many nearby residents and workers—especially those in the medical district—reaching the park without a car remains difficult and, in some cases, unsafe.
Extending the new green corridor along Harry Hines toward Bachman Lake would create a continuous, safe route between the medical district, nearby neighborhoods, and the lake. Hospital staff could decompress after long shifts with a short bike ride to the water. Residents could safely walk or cycle to a major park. Visitors using nearby transit could reach one of the city’s best outdoor spaces without getting in a car.
Dallas has spent years building an impressive network of trails and parks. The next step is connecting them in ways that make everyday life better for the people who live and work nearby. Linking the Harry Hines project to Bachman Lake would do exactly that.
This is more than a trail extension. It is a chance to connect communities, expand access to nature, and ensure that a transformative infrastructure project delivers benefits far beyond a single corridor.
Dallas should seize the moment and make Bachman Lake part of the path forward – something our Council Members Laura Cadena in District 6 and Gay Donnell Willis in District 13 should lead us in advocating for.
