BioBlitz at Bachman Lake: Join the 2026 City Nature Challenge

Two mallard ducks at Bachman Lake Park

Ever heard of a BioBlitz? It’s a fast-paced, community science event where neighbors, families, and scientists work together to identify as many plant and animal species as possible in a set area over a short time. Think of it as a real-world nature scavenger hunt—one that transforms an ordinary walk into a meaningful scientific contribution.

By documenting everything from towering trees to tiny aquatic insects, participants create a valuable snapshot of local biodiversity and ecosystem health. These observations help researchers track species trends, monitor environmental changes, and protect native habitats.

Join the 2026 City Nature Challenge (April 24–27)

Each spring, BioBlitz events scale up globally through the City Nature Challenge, an international effort encouraging people to document urban wildlife using the iNaturalist app.

From April 24–27, 2026, cities around the world including Dallas compete to see who can record the most species. It’s a fun, friendly competition that highlights an important truth: cities are full of thriving ecosystems waiting to be explored.

Explore Biodiversity at Bachman Lake and Greenbelt

In Northwest Dallas, Bachman Lake and the Bachman Greenbelt offer the perfect setting for a BioBlitz.

Here’s what you might discover:

  • Nesting birds in the trees

  • Ducks and turtles along the water

  • Bees and butterflies in meadow areas

  • Native grasses and seasonal wildflowers

Every photo you take contributes valuable data that helps ecologists understand which species are thriving, and which may need protection.

Why Your Participation Matters

BioBlitz events have led to surprising discoveries, including previously unknown species identified by everyday participants. While you may not discover a brand-new beetle in Dallas, your observations still play a critical role in:

  • Tracking invasive species

  • Monitoring rare or migrating wildlife

  • Supporting conservation efforts in urban environments

No scientific background is required, just curiosity and a smartphone.
