FoBL Newsletter - September 2021

“By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.” – Helen Hunt Jackson

September 11th is right around the corner! Come join us for a Heart Walk at Bachman Lake Park. This is also our #plogging day, so we will also be picking up trash around the lake! Please register and remember that fundraising is optional!

The board members for Friends of Bachman Lake have self-organized around two committees, one focused on Bachman Lake Park and one on the Bachman Lake Area. A third, internal committee, will be responsible for communications and keeping the community informed. If you want to help out in either the two main committees, write us at: bachmanlakefriends@gmail.com

North Texas Giving Day is September 23, when nonprofit groups in the region ask for your support. There are many worthy organizations raising money in this annual campaign, and we ask for your consideration as well. As we started work this spring on the Bachman Lake Greenbelt nature trails, we discovered that 8 bridges would be needed in order to navigate the culverts. We need your help raising the dollars to build them! Please donate to Dallas Parks Foundation and add Friends of Bachman Lake in the notes to direct your gift accordingly.

We commend the efforts by NCTCoG to seek community input and to keep the area informed about their work. The last round of feedback was due on 8/31 and we hope you took the time to weigh in. All the meeting videos and presentations can be found here.

CALLING ALL TEXANS - Help protect migrating birds this fall by turning Lights Out, across Texas! Here’s how you can help: turn out all non-essential lights from 11 pm - 6 am every night from August 15 - November 30, especially during the peak migration period of September 5 - October 29, when half of the total fall bird migration traffic passes through Texas.

Are you wondering what is going on with the dredging for Bachman Lake? We were too and low-and-behold, we just received an update from DWU! Looks like the responses to the dredging bid will be presented to City Council in October and if approved, dredging will start Winter 2021/2022.
